SOME MODERN EXAMPLES OF COVENANT
I had preached the Covenants sermon in a black African church in Sydney some years ago, and after the service over coffee the Pastor told me that the great British missionary David Livingstone entered into a pact (covenant) with the various tribes he worked amongst, and instead of killing him (missionary was a favourite delicacy at that time) they protected him. I checked it out and this is correct.
Pastor Ray Bevan of Newport in Wales tells the story of an English business woman who heard about some business opportunities in Saudi Arabia, so she flew to Riyad and was met by a Saudi woman who took her around the country over a number of weeks where negotiations began to be entered into. On the last day the Saudi lady said to English woman, I have really got to like and appreciate you, and in our culture we make a covenant with such a person, that if I you ever need me in any way, I am there for you. The English woman did not want to offend so she went through the ceremony and then got on a plane and flew to Heathrow. She was met by her C.E.O. who informed her there had been a financial crisis and her business had collapsed, she would lose everything including her house. She immediately contacted the Saudi lady and said cancel all negotiations my business has collapsed. Within days there was a knock on her front door, it was the Saudi lady, She said remember the Covenant we entered into ? I said if you needed me and I can help you I will always be available. You didn’t know that my father owns 10 oil wells,. he is a Billionaire. The Saudi lady cleared up all the her business debts and bought her a new house and then returned to Saudi Arabia, She did this all because of Covenant.
The great scholar C.S.Lewis also entered into a covenant with a person. During his military training in 1918 he shared a room with a Paddy Moore, they became very close, they decided if one of them survived the war the other would look after the other person’s family. Paddy died in the last days of the war. C.S.Lewis took Paddy’s sister into his home and cared for her for the rest of her life until she was hospitalised and passed away in the 1940’s All because of Covenant.
Look afresh today at the Covenant scars of Jesus, and bow down and worship Him in Spirit and in truth.
