IS DISCIPLESHIP A BIG DEAL??

By John Ollis

Yes it is, why ?

  1. Jesus commanded us to make disciples.

WHAT IS BIBLICAL DISCIPLESHIP?

It is not just a class, but the Biblical picture expresses the thought of new believers sitting at the feet of a discipler.

It is includes the essential aspect of one on one ministry (NOT JUST IN A GROUP) to the new believer?

WHY ONE ON ONE DISCIPLESHIP?

1. We need to be sure the new convert is born again and has assurance of sins forgiven.

2. We need to be sure what is being taught in the group is being embraced by the individual. such as:

Prayer is becoming an essential daily part of the new believer’s life.

That Bible reading, study and meditation  is becoming an essential  daily part of the new believer’s life.

That the new believer is learning to protect his mind.

That new believer  starts to understand his awesome inheritance in Christ.

The new believer is becoming “planted” in a local church and beginning to serve.

The new believer needs to be baptised in water and the Holy Spirit, and is to be a witness for Christ.

The new believer learns how to relate to the opposite sex.

The married new believer learns how to be a Christian husband or wife, and parent.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF DISCIPLESHIP ?

I believe the goal of discipleship is to see the new believer come to maturity. not in 2-3 years or more, my experience is that between 6-9 months  real maturity can be achieved. Some believers NEVER  mature, through lack of discipleship, and assume that their level of spiritual life is normal!!!

The very reason for the recent series of blogs (on understanding ourselves) is to show how important Discipleship is in the purposes of God, and that it is not just a 4-6  weeks course learning the “rules of the club” but to develop a Christian lifestyle and becoming a man or woman of God.

The new believer needs to be taught (trained) to develop his spiritual senses, and this we will discuss in our next blog.
