How To Find The Will Of God For Your Life (Part 1)

Having been in the ministry for over 48 years, I have had literally hundreds (if not thousands) of people come to me ask me “How can I know the will of God for my life”?.
As a young man, our Associate Pastor in my church made a statement to me, which I sure did not understand at the time, but now completely see what he was saying.  He said:
“IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET OUT OF THE WILL OF GOD UNLESS YOU CHOOSE TOO”
We sure don’t want to miss the will of God for our lives, but sometimes it seems so hard to detect/to be sure what is the Lord’s will.
Have you ever heard of the HARBOUR LIGHTS TEACHING? I think it was R.A.Torrey that developed this teaching. As I understand it when a ship comes into harbour at night it needs to line up a number of lights (generally on the shore) and when these lights line up the ship’s captain knows he is in the correct channel, and will not hit the rocks or get into shallow water.
WHAT ARE THE HARBOUR LIGHTS WE NEED TO LINE UP?
1.The Peace of God
2.The Word of God
3. Circumstances
4. Godly Counsel
Please note all these lights (keys) need to line up before we can be sure we are in the will of God. Just because you feel peace about something that in itself is not sufficient grounds to move. Some people go around and ask numerous people and when they hear what they want to hear then they move. Circumstances alone must never be the basis of our decision making either.
The Bible says our God is NOT the author of confusion, he wants us to know clearly His will and if we follow these clear guidelines we will always be in the will of God. King David said (Ps 37.23) “The steps of a GOOD man are ORDERED by the Lord”. We must not have selfish motives in our hear or a personal private agenda, and the Lord promises us to lead us.
