THE LAW OF CHRIST

By John Ollis

As young people we loved to sing the chorus “I am not under law but under grace” I am sure we did not fully understand what we were singing, the truth dawns on you more and more as you grow older.
In Gal. 6:2 Paul tells us to “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfil the LAW OF CHRIST. I am sure Theologians will tell us the “law of Christ” involves many things but here Paul tells us the law includes our relationship with other people.
This clearly relates to Christ’s teaching in John 13:32 A NEW COMMANDMENT I GIVE UNTO YOU THAT YOU LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, THAT YOU ALSO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Verse 35 indicates the proof that we are genuine disciples of Jesus is because of our love for one another, but not only fellow believers but even our enemies. Matt. 5:44.

HOW CAN WE FULFIL THIS LAW?

Jesus never asks us to do something unless He gives us the ability to obey. In Rom. 5:5 Paul tells us that when we are born again God pours out His divine (Agape) love into our hearts. So we have the ability to love God, love our family and fellow believers, and even our enemies.

Now back to Galatians 6:2 we are to bear one another’s burdens.

I put a simple short prayer request on Facebook yesterday, seeking prayer for my health, as I was (am) feeling quite unwell. I was overwhelmed by the response.

Some were from friends of over fifty years from when we were growing up in our local church. Many I have not seen for almost that long. One of the many reasons I love social media. It is encouraging they have not forgotten me.

Some were from the thousands of students I have had the privilege of teaching over the years. They know me, I honestly do not know  many of them but they have felt to pick me up on FB.

Some were from  ministry colleagues.

One was from a Messianic Jew

One was from a cousin who is a Spirit filled  believer who I am yet to met.

The responses came from Holland, (a young minister I have only met twice, but we connected in the Spirit), some from Singapore, and Malaysia, from Kenya, from Indonesia, from the USA, and of course so many from Australia.

I want to say a BIG THANK YOU, and please keep praying. It is only recently that I have become very aware of the ageing process, and joked recently God has give us a 70 years “warranty” I am now in my 76th year, I still have so  many things I want to do, so many dreams yet to be fulfilled, of course I loudly say THE WILL OF THE LORD BE DONE, and sincerely pray myself that my health will improve for me to do all that is in my heart.

Just this week it is two years since I returned home after my last fall and hospitalisation, I have not had to request prayer really since then, I encourage to bear this burden with me, and so FULFIL THE LAW OF CHRIST. If you have a prayer request will you share it with me, so I can also “fulfil the law of Christ.
