DISCIPLESHIP & MENTORING

By John Ollis

I sent out a small set of survey questions on Discipleship & Mentoring, and received an excellent numerical response. Sadly, the majority see these things areas as being handled in a class situation or simply by observation of others. I guess I should not have been surprised, as this seems to be the common practice in most places. I am so aware of Leaders responses “That I am just to busy”, and I can appreciate that, so what is the answer? I believe the Scriptures teach we are to raise up a team of DISCIPLEMAKERS within the local church who will walk with a new Believer (for as long as it takes) until being a Christian has become a lifestyle.

I was encouraged by those who wrote and said DISCIPLESHIP MUST HAVE A ONE ON ONE COMPONENT, many of them I know and clearly see the results of this component in their lives.

The reality is if we want quality disciples and effective quality Leaders there must be a ONE ON ONE COMPONENT. Although we are aware of the negatives that can flow from social media, we can now do much of this via video on WhatsApp and other apps. I am personally meeting weekly with a young man in Jakarta, and another in Malaysia via these means. We can regularly message through SMS and again other apps to keep encouraging the new Believer.

I was initially discouraged when I received so many responses that did not include this component, and I wondered if I was a heretic, but I reject those thoughts and will continue going down this path personally, and praying others will also see this important truth.

There is no doubt that 2019 is going to be an exciting year of blessing and increase, let us press on and in to the purposes of God for us and the Church.
