THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY & THAT IS GOD'S WAY.

By John Ollis

In September 1970 I received and accepted an invitation to become the Pastor of a small country church in the Blue Mountains N.S.W. The Manse was literally just around the corner from the shopping centre, so we would walk as a family to go and do our shopping. Our eldest son was just 2+ and was very much the adventurous type, so I had to hold his hand very firmly so he would not rush off here or there to check something out. I have often been reminded of this over the years, as I meditated on the question God posed to Amos in his prophecy in chapter 3 verse 3. Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? Other translations give some interesting pictures relating to this question. The AMP O.T. says Do two walk together except they make an appointment and have agreed? The NLT says Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction? The MESSAGE Bible says Do two people walk hand in hand if they aren’t going to the same place?
This is one of those questions that only has ONE answer, and the people Amos was speaking too, could easily have said, WHAT A STUPID QUESTION! Common sense tells us that the answer is NO, yet God’s people then and still to this today, are so often wanting to go their own way, and want God’s endorsement on their decision and His blessing.

we must realise THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY AND IT IS GOD’S WAY, AND THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE,

Here are some comments on the various translations.

God will never agree to our choices unless they are in line with His Word and will.

To walk together (hand in hand) to me speaks of RELATIONSHIP, and that we happily AGREE to go God’s way.

Under the New Covenant we do not have to make an appointment to meet with Him we have instant ACCESS into the presence of God.

If we really know what the Word of God says, there is NO DISCUSSION to be entered into, we must simply be willing happily to OBEY.

Remember the “Harbour Light” Teaching from a past blog? When a ship came into a harbour at night, it had to line up a number of lights, when these lights all lined up the ship’s captain knew he was in the right channel and would not hit the rocks or get into the shallows, here are 4 lights to consider.

  1. The peace of God
  2. What does the Word of God say
  3. Circumstances,
  4. Godly Counsel

If these “light” ALL line up, (not just a single one in isolation) then you know you can walk hand in hand in agreement with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
