COMMUNION SUNDAY

By John Ollis

Many churches around the world conduct a Monthly Communion Service as part of the Believers Service, usually on the first Sunday of the month, and tomorrow Sunday 4th October is Communion Sunday. As we here are still under restrictions our service will be “on line”. I was asked by the Pastor if I would conduct Communion and it was filmed on Thursday

We know on the night Jesus was to be betrayed He gathered the Disciples together in the Upper Room for a meal together, we read in Luke 22:19 NKJV And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

I wonder if the Discipled fully comprehended what Jesus was saying, probably not knowing that within 24 hours Jesus would be crucified and placed in a tomb.

We all know Peter’s declaration in Matthew 16, when Jesus asked the question “Who do you say that I am am” and Peter strongly declared THOU ART THE CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD, just a few verses later we read in verse 21 NKJV From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.

The Disciples were hoping that Jesus would set up His kingdom now and throw out the Romans, so their thoughts on this night were probably not on Christ declaring it was time for His death.

It was much easier for the Corinthians to comprehend when Paul reminded them in 1 Cor. 11:24 NKJV when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me. It was a historic fact that Jesus had been crucified.

IN COMMUNION WE ARE NOT TO JUST REMEMBER JESUS’ PHYSICAL DEATH ON THE CROSS.

Isaiah is known as the “Messianic prophet, and he proclaimed in Isaiah 53: 4-5 NKJV

Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

The Bible tells us because of Adam’s sin (and ours) we have been condemned and guilty and deserve nothing but the lowest hell, but in eternity past God had a plan that someone would STAND IN OUR PLACE and take the sins of the whole world upon Himself, and if we repented WE WOULD BE DECLARED NOT GULTY.

That is what we must remember not only Christ’s physical death as we gather to have Communion, but every day of our life,

So tomorrow, as you receive Communion, let us mediate on and remember WHAT JESUS DID FOR US, AND WHAT HE CONSTANTLY DOES FOR US IN EVER MAKING INTERCESSION FOR US.

Let us reaffirm Jesus is THE LORD, THE BOSS, THE MASTER, THE KING THE RULER, THE OWNER AND PRESIDENT OF OUR LIFE, AND BY HIS GRACE WE WILL LIVE AND SERVE HIM WITH ALL OUR HEARTS AMEN.
