MORE ON DISCIPLESHIP

By John Ollis

My readers know the passion and burden of my heart is DISCIPLE-MAKING & MENTORING. I am sure some readers groan when they see another blog on this topic. I must admit, there are many times that I feel “I am a voice crying in the wilderness”, as the 21st century concept of Discipleship seems so far away from the Biblical pattern.

I shared my goal regarding raising up Discople-Makers/Mentors during 2021 in a recent blog, and yesterday wrote about the requirements that I believe are essential to be a Disciple-Maker or Mentor, I was so stirred up, I posted a number of statements on FB. such as:

DISCIPLESHIP IS THE ELEPHANT IN THE CHURCH.

WE ARE TO BUILD THE CHURCH “ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN” (OF THE WORD OF GOD), AND THE RESULT IS WE WILL SEE THE GLORY OF GOD, SO WHAT IS THE BIBLICAL PATTERN FOR DISCIPLESHIP?

I also asked the question, “WERE YOU BIBLICALLY DISCIPLED WHEN YOU WERE BORN AGAIN? DO YOU KNOW WHAT DISCIPLESHIP IS ALL ABOUT?

I have received many “likes” and “love hearts” but also some very interesting comments, I have recently received some messages from ministries from the Indian sub-continent, I actually asked them :

If they had been discipled? Some said they had a good “teacher”

I asked simple questions about a daily Quiet Time and they could not tell me what they considered important components in prayer.

I asked about how do they protect their mind? again there was some strange answers.

For so many people, and sadly some ministry their definition of Discipleship IS LEARNING THE RULES OF THE CLUB, but isn’t about assisting the new Believer how to make LIVING AS A CHRISTIAN THEIR LIFESTYLE.

Some ministries sadly also seem to have the attitude now that a person has prayed the “Sinner’s Prayer it is God’s responsibility to teach them how to live!!!!!!

Jesus tells us in Matt. 28:18-20 NKJV And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and MAKE DISCIPLES of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

It is clearly OUR RESPONSIBILTY to Biblically Disciple new Believers. Of course it includes much teaching, but the Disciple-Maker’ must assist the new believer to embrace the teaching, and see there is that 12 inch drop for head (mind) to heart and the information becomes REVELATION. That is why I am convinced we must walk with the new Believer (FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES) until the teaching expresses itself in Christian lifestyle.

Your prayers, encouragement and comments are always appreciated.
