LOOKING AT THE TRINITY OF MAN (5)
We now come to the third part of what makes up man, THE BODY. It is interesting that the Bible speaks of Spirit, Soul & Body, but the world tends to speak of Body, Soul & Spirit, I think this suggests mankind is very BODY CENTRED and we are so concerned about our appearance externally, and sadly not enough on what we need to be internally. It has been said that we really can’t see each other, only the house we live in and that it is through the five senses we interact with the world around us.
There is no doubt there is considerable connection between soul and body, for example, our emotions, what we see with our eyes, and our sexual drive. The bible has much to say about our body, and we sure are very aware of our body, and its responses and reactions. A verse I have probably quoted more than any other in my ministry is Romans 12:1 as it is an essential to our spiritual life and development I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service NKJV Paul shares this verse and truth in the PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE, That 24/7 we need to be presenting our body in surrender to the Lord. The reality is unless Jesus is the Lord of our BODY as well as our soul, we will not, cannot live a victorious life. Here is what the MESSAGE BIBLE SAYS: So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. The AMPLIFIED TRANSLATION says
I APPEAL to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.
These three translations gives us a clear reason why we must constantly surrender our body to the Lord. Paul expresses it this way in Romans 6.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. Romans 6:12-13 NKJV God wants our body to be a channel and INSTRUMENT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, this can only happen as we live the surrendered life.
We see from the diagram, our body has 5 senses and everyone of them can be a blessing or a curse to us, for example in our last blog we quoted Job 31:1 about making A COVENANT WITH OUR EYES. You may remember the chorus we sang in Sunday School
“Watch you eyes, watch your eyes what they see, there’s a father up above looking down in tender love, watch your eyes what they see” We are living in a generation where there is the scourge of internet pornography, and too many Christians are caught up watching it, too many Christians go to “R” rated movies and wonder why they struggle spiritually. I don’t need to illustrate the other 4 senses. I think they are self explanatory.
MAY THE LORD HELP US DAILY TO HAVE OUR 5 SENSES UNDER HIS CONTROL.
Let me add here, that a New Christian needs to learn how to develop his 5 spiritual senses, again Biblical Discipleship will assist here.
Our body also has 3 BASIC DRIVES, HUNGER, SEX SELF PRESERVATION (SURVIVAL)
Each of these 3 drives must be surrendered to the Lord, otherwise again the enemy or our lower nature, and lack of discipline and self control can cause us to sin.
Because of Adam’s sin, we are all born with a sinful nature, but through the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ we can have complete power over sin, not that we cannot sin, but need not sin, let us not blame the evil one, WE CAN BE MORE THAN CONQUERERS THROUGH CHRIST.
