SOME THOUGHTS FROM PSALM 139 FOR YOU.

By John Ollis

All Christians I am sure without exception love the Book of Psalms, and most of us have a number of favourite Psalms that have been a blessing to us. One of my favourites is Psalm 139, too me virtually every verse speaks to me and blesses me, I actually pray (for example) verses 23-24 NKJV every day

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and knw my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. King David, had no doubt a revelation that God sees and knows everything.

That is why in Psalm 66:18 NLT David makes the statement If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. So every time David prayed he made sure he had cleared the decks of any unconfessed sin so his prayer time was effective.

In Psalm 139: 1- 4 NLT David confirms God’s Omniscience (that He is all seeing and knowing) by saying

O Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.

David goes on in verse 14 expressing a deep understanding of the fact that God made us, and that we are FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE. Most of my readers including myself are not medically and scientifically trained, but through the internet we have such a vast amount of information available to us to indicate just have unique the human body is. How (so called) intelligent people can even suggest we evolved basically out of the primeval slime and eventually developed into monkeys and now man I will never know. Think for a moment about the human body and its bone structure, then all the various organs that are inside that body, is hardly to fully comprehend. Then beyond that there are so many other aspects that we don’t understand, and simply take for granted. At nearly 78 I am becoming very aware that my body is wearing out (and I am sure looking forward to receiving my new immortal body.

I discovered something new about the human body a few years ago, I had a nasty fall in the shower (I think I fainted) the result was a broken leg and a dislocated arm. In hospital I had a Bone Scan and it was discovered I had developed Osteoporosis. which indicated my body was deficient in certain hormones and Calcium and Vitamin D3, which cases my bones to be weak and easy to break. I now have to have a quarterly injection to assist me. One of the side effects of the lack of the hormone is emotional fear and stress and worry. I guess David didn’t realise just how fearfully and wonderfully we are made.

The injection only lessens the problem (at least for me) so as a Christian I have to face up to these irrational thoughts and fears, and I am so glad part of my inheritance as a Believer is the ability to face up to them and with the Lord’s help deal with them. God speaking through Isaiah says in 41:10 NLT Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my righteous right hand.

WHAT A GLORIOUS PROMISE GOD GIVES US

Then in the New Testament Paul tells us, when the fears and thoughts are flying around our head WE MUST CAST THEM DOWN. 2 Cor. 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, CASTING DOWN arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, The NLT expresses it this way: We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to KNOCK DOWN the strongholds of human reasoning and to DESTROY false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. I have capitalized some key words, like CASTING DOWN, KNOCK DOWN, DESTROY. What are these weapons that God has given us. I have written about these before, but let me remind you and myself of what is available to us. The evil one literally hates these weapons.
