MY CONSTANT BURDEN TO SEE THE LORD’S TEACHING ABOUT DISCIPLESHIP FULFILLED.

By John Ollis

I hear so many stories of people who make “decisions” for Christ and then seem to be expected to just “grow” as a Christian without any assistance.

What is your definition of “making disciples”???

Matt.28:18-20 NKJV And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

AMP.N.T .Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.
19 Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing theminto the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days (,perpetually, uniformly, and on every ocassion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age.Amen (so let it be). Matthew 28:18-20

MESSAGE Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and TRAIN EVERYONE you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

PASSION Then Jesus came close to them and said, “All the authority of the universe has been given to me. 19 Now go IN MY AUTHORITY and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 20 And teach them to faithfully follow all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age.”

There are so many definitions of Discipleship today, from nothing (too hard and time consuming, to a 4-6 week class teaching the “important” doctrines of the church.

I have no problem with Discipleship having a class component, but it is what is taught, plus I sincerely believe it must have A ONE ON ONE COMPONENT TOO.

I sincerely believe that Discipleship is especially about HOW TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE, if a new Believer is not taught these things, old habits may continue to be in his life and this can cause backsliding.

In simple terms I believe Discipleship is a Disciplemaker walking with a new Believer FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES,

THE GOAL OF DISCIPLESHIP SHOULD BE TO SEE THE NEW BELIEVER COME TO THAT PLACE WHERE HE IS BECOMES A DISCIPLEMAKER.

So what are the essential components to Discipling

  1. To see the new Believer has assurance of sins forgiven 1 John 5:13
  2. To know what are the essential ingredients to daily prayer, and that these become part of his daily lifestyle.
  3. (a) Confession & Repentance
  4. (b) Surrender
  5. (c) Thanksgiving
  6. (d Praise
  7. (e) Worship
  8. (f) Intercession
  9. (g) Petition
  10. ((h) Listening
  11. To know what is his inheritance NOW as a Believer, including The Whole Armour of God.
  12. The importance and power of the Word of God

I am sure there are numerous other things we could add to this list.

Discipleship must be male to male. or female to female.

The Discipelmaker must seek to build a relationship with the new Believer and ask the “hard” questions. Which would include practical teaching and assistance to protect the mind (last 2 blogs) what the Bible says about relationships with the opposite sex.

Only when these foundations have been clearly laid and are working in the Disciple’s life then the Disciplemaker can starting sharing with him to think and pray about serving, and ministry.

I am sure there are other things I could add to this list, but sadly we know of so many who never were given even these basic foundations and their spiritual life was at times a struggle.

Personally, I believe it is very important to have a MENTOR in one’s life, if you do not have one seek out a mature Believer and seek to relate to him.
