A WORD FROM MICAH

By John Ollis

Are children still taught to memorise Scripture in Sunday School anymore ? I sure was, there is still such a deposit of Scripture in my heart and mind from those days, and I thank God I was taught to do so. A well known Scripture comes to mind that is Micah 6:8 NKJV He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
Here Micah is prophesying to God’s people, and the very first thing he says is God has shown us especially we New Covenant Believers in His Word how to act and live. I have been in communication recently with an Asian Pastor regarding a FB post I forwarded it reads

“Since Satan cannot destroy the Gospel, he has often neutralised its usefulness by addition, subtraction or substitution” J.C.Ryle.

We are living in such a generation of Biblical illiteracy, and sadly ignorance of what the Bible says, consequently God’s people DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ACT & LIVE. Thus the lifestyle and behaviour of many 21st century Believers do not line up with the Word of God.

I want to just highlight the points Micah makes in verse 6.

TO DO JUSTLY. That we abide by the laws of the land, and do what is right and fair, to those who live on our world. There is much talk these days about justice and doing justly, and often this gets mixed up with politics, and this is an area that we need to be very wise and careful in. Personally you will never see political blogs written by me, as you many times cannot legislate justice and righteous living, and often when we speak out, the Gospel gets misinterpreted and filtered through people’s political perspectives. Many times we cannot deal with justice on the horizontal, but must use prayer as the means.

TO LOVE MERCY This is one of the awesome attribute of our God. I am so thankful He showed mercy to me, as King David says in Psalm 40:2-3 NKJV He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire, He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand, He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. I have also failed the Lord many times and over and over again He has shown His mercy to me. Because the Lord has shown His mercy constantly to me, I must show love and compassion and kindness to those in my world.

TO WALK HUMBLY WITH MY GOD. When you realise that without God we are nothing, and have nothing to be proud about, we sure can’t take ourselves too seriously, but as we take God seriously in our life, we are guaranteed His blessings and goodness on our lives.

Brothers and Sisters, let us ask the Lord to help us, to act and do what He has shown us in His Word, and people will see Jesus in us amen.
